The Judiciary Police cracked a case of massive fraud and computer forgery, with a local man apprehended
Between February and April 2024, the Judiciary Police had received reports from 8 individuals successively, stating that they had been defrauded of money under the pretext of assisting in currency exchange between January and April, incurring loss ranging from MOP3,000 to MOP53,000 to each one of them.
The I.T. Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police initiated investigation and identified a local man involved in the case after analysing multiple communication accounts, mainland payment platform accounts and local bank accounts. He was intercepted in the Northern District on April 22nd and was brought back to the Judiciary Police for further investigation.
Investigation revealed that the involved local man had taken the initiative to approach people who needed currency exchange in multiple communication groups of a university. After the victims deposited money to the designated accounts as instructed, he would procrastinate with excuses including accounts being frozen, exceedance of transfer limit, etc. In addition, he would attach screenshots of forged electronic transfer records to stall the victims. If the victims claimed to report it to the police, he would transfer the money defrauded from other victims to the opposite party in an attempt to prevent them from disclosing the incident to the police. Information showed that the involved local man had defrauded 8 individuals successively with the abovementioned modus operandi between January and April 2024, incurring an amount up to MOP110,674. Among them, 3 victims who had reported to the police were refunded a total of MOP14,950. Currently, there are still 5 victims who have yet to receive their refunds with a total loss of MOP95,724. The involved local man had already spent the fraud proceeds on gambling debt repayment and his daily expenses.
Based on investigative results, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved local man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (massive amount) and computer forgery.
