Guangdong and Macao join efforts in busting syndicate assisting in illegal immigration, arresting six individuals
Through the “Joint Prevention Mechanism for Anti-illegal Immigration”, the Macao Customs Service, having notified the Public Security Police Force and the Judiciary Police of illegal immigrants’ entry into Macao via Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on 23rd March 2024, intercepted five illegal immigrants at the said location, whereas several others had fled.
Realizing that the case involved a cross-border human smuggling syndicate, the Intelligence and Support Department of the Judiciary Police promptly informed the mainland Chinese police, with whom joint investigation was conducted under the coordination of the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department.
It was found that the involved local man had taken a taxi to the said location to pick up one male and one female illegal immigrants to flee the scene, while some illegal immigrants had taken another taxi to Taipa to meet with the two involved mainland Chinese men who had come to pick them up. Rapidly taking action, the Judiciary Police arrested the involved local man and his local wife in the northern district, while joining hands with the Public Security Police Force to capture the two involved mainland Chinese men and one female illegal immigrant respectively in Taipa and Cotai. Meanwhile, the mainland Chinese police had also successfully apprehended two members of the human smuggling syndicate in mainland China.
The eight illegal immigrants were found to have smuggled into Macao for gambling. Of the two involved locals who admitted to have assisted in their illegal immigration, the involved local man had received a reward through his wife after picking up the illegal immigrants, while his wife had also received illegal proceeds thereof. The two involved mainland Chinese men refused to cooperate in investigation.
Based on investigative outcomes, the Judiciary Police transferred the two involved locals to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of assisting in illegal entry and exit, illegal staying and criminal syndicate, and the two involved mainland Chinese men for the charges of sheltering illegal immigrants and illegal stayers. The Judiciary Police will continue working with the mainland Chinese police to conduct in-depth investigation into the case, while pursuing the remaining involved persons.
