Mainland Chinese man arrested for job referral fraud
Four individuals took a mainland Chinese man to report to the Judiciary Police on the evening of 8th March 2024, alleging that they had been defrauded by the latter on the pretext of job referral.
Launching investigation, the Economic Crimes Division found that the four victims, having learnt from the mainland Chinese man in December 2023 that he could assist them in obtaining employment as handymen and drivers in Macao, had agreed to pay and handed him a referral fee plus a visa processing fee that totaled MOP 13,000 each. The victims, who had never heard from him since then, arranged to meet with the involved mainland Chinese man on 8th March 2024 to resolve the issue. Only after repeated questioning did he admit to have gambled away all the money, causing the four victims a loss of MOP 52,000 in total.
Upon investigation, it was found that in addition to the four said victims, two other victims who were unable to enter Macao due to visa issues had been defrauded of MOP 26,000 collectively by the involved mainland Chinese man in the same manner.
It was found that the involved mainland Chinese man, unqualified for job referral, had gambled away all the proceeds of MOP 78,000 that he had defrauded from the six said victims.
Based on investigative results, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland Chinese man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (massive amount).
