Mainland Chinese man arrested in crackdown of four in-flight thefts
A local man reported to the Judiciary Police on 14th November 2023 that witnessing a fellow passenger looting his luggage in the overhead compartment onboard a flight from Macao to Tokyo, Japan, he instantly stopped him and retrieved his luggage.
The Section for Offences against Property of the Judiciary Police promptly launched investigation, identifying the involved mainland Chinese man. Meanwhile, analysis of similar in-flight theft cases indicated that he was involved in another case that took place on 15th January 2024, in which the male victim flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Macao, who had placed his backpack in the overhead compartment, later found his HKD 11,000 and MYR 3,900 tucked in red packets therein stolen.
The involved mainland Chinese man was intercepted on his arrival in Macao from Tokyo, Japan on 3rd March 2024. During investigation, the Judiciary Police received yet another complaint from a local man, whose JPY 200,000 in red packets and a bluetooth earphone inside his backpack placed in the overhead compartment onboard the same-day flight from Tokyo, Japan to Macao had been stolen. The cash inside the red packets had been replaced by the thief with vomit bags. Realising the victim and the involved mainland Chinese man had been on the same flight, the Judiciary Police officers seized from him JPY 200,000 stolen from the victim, alongside JPY 691,000 and hundreds of dollars in foreign currencies that were suspected to be stolen proceeds.
Continuing with in-depth investigation into the case, the Judiciary Police ascertained that in addition to the three said in-flight thefts, the involved mainland Chinese man also played a part in a similar case that occurred on 14th April 2011, in which the male victim, who had placed his crossbody bag in the overhead compartment onboard a flight from Shanghai to Macao, later found his HKD 38,000 and RMB 2,900 encased in two envelopes therein stolen.
It was found that the involved mainland Chinese man had committed the thefts while the victims were asleep or using the restroom, taking out and replacing cash in the envelopes with vomit bags to stall the victims’ discovery of their property being stolen.
During interrogation, the involved mainland Chinese man refused to cooperate in investigation. Based on investigative results, he was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of aggravated theft.
