The Judiciary Police joining hands with the Customs Service in cracking a case of assisting illegal immigration, apprehending a local man
On 20th February 2024, the Intelligence and Support Department of the Judiciary Police was notified that, a smuggling syndicate would assist illegal immigrants to smuggle to Macao by sea and disembark on Coloane island on that day. The Macao Customs Service was informed of the incident forthwith for joint deployment.
During investigation, personnel of the Judiciary Police discovered that, the involved Macao man had been driving around the vicinity of the aforesaid location, suspecting to be a lookout for the smuggling activity. In the wee hours of February 21st, the involved speedboat sailed to somewhere near Long Chao Kok in Coloane and docked at high speed. Personnel of the Judiciary Police and Customs Service took actions immediately, and made arrests on land and at sea respectively. The abovementioned involved Macao man as well as three male and one female illegal immigrants were eventually intercepted at the shoreline, landing point and nearby bushes.
Upon investigation, it was learnt that the aforesaid criminal syndicate had charged a smuggling fee ranging from RMB35,000 to RMB40,000, for rendering assistance to illegal immigrants to come to Macao to gamble and engage in illegal currency exchange activities (“the so-called “money exchange gang”). The involved Macao man denied committing the crime. Yet, based on the investigative findings of the Judiciary Police, there were ample indications that he had provided assistance for the smuggling activity.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved Macao man to the Public Prosecutions Office for offences such as criminal syndicate, assisting illegal entry and exit and illegal staying.
