Two mainlanders arrested for passing on counterfeit currency
On 22nd January 2024, the Judiciary Police was informed by a casino in ZAPE that the involved mainland woman had exchanged HKD with two bogus USD100 banknotes inside the casino. During the investigation at the scene by officers of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police, the involved woman was found accompanied by the involved mainland man, who was in possession of 96 pieces of bogus USD100 banknotes with different serial numbers. The duo was therefore brought back to the Judiciary Police for follow-up handling.
Investigation revealed that on January 21st, the involved mainland man had attempted to conduct currency exchange with some of the involved bogus USD banknotes at the cashiers of two casinos but to no avail since the related banknotes were unable to pass the currency detector. He then called in the involved mainland woman, via social networking app, asking for her help to conduct the currency exchange at the cashier, which revealed the incident. Examination by the Forensic Science Department of the Judiciary Police against the involved banknotes confirmed that they were all counterfeit.
Upon interrogation, the involved mainland man confessed that the related banknotes were obtained in mainland from someone through currency exchange; while the involved mainland woman alleged that she had only assisted to exchange currency so as to gain some tips, and denied knowledge that the related banknotes were counterfeit.
The Judiciary Police transferred that involved duo to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of passing on counterfeit currency.
