Mainland man arrested for currency exchange fraud
On 29th January 2024, the mainland female victim made an appointment, via social networking app, with the involved mainland man for currency exchange at the lobby of a casino hotel in Cotai district. Upon transferring RMB373,600 to the designated bank account of the involved man as per instructions, the victim asked him to exchange the cash into chips at the casino cashier together. When they arrived at the cashier, the involved mainland man took out four stacks of HKD1,000 banknotes from his bag, put them at the cashier window and fled immediately. Seeing this, the victim called the security guards on-site for help, and finally intercepted the involved mainland man. Upon checking the aforementioned four stacks of banknotes, the victim discovered that they were all counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”, hence reported to the police for help.
Upon investigation by officers of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police, the involved mainland man admitted to perpetration, and confessed that due to debt repayment, he had been instructed by someone to bring “practice vouchers” from the mainland to Macao to commit fraud through currency exchange.
Based on investigative results, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
