Two mainlanders arrested for currency exchange scams
The Judiciary Police received two currency exchange scam reports on 14th and 15th January 2024 respectively, forthwith dispatched officers from the Economic Crimes Division for follow-up investigation.
The two victims separately made appointments, via social networking app, with the involved mainland man and the involved mainland woman for currency exchange at two hotels in Cotai district. After the victims transferred RMB186,000 and RMB49,000 to the designated bank accounts per instructions, they individually received three wads of HKD1,000 banknotes. Upon checking on the spot, they discovered that the banknotes were counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”, hence immediately reported to the police for help.
Subsequent to investigation, the two involved mainlanders admitted that they had been instructed by someone to transact with the victims, and each of them would be rewarded RMB3,000 upon completion. They denied knowledge that the related banknotes were “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police transferred the two involved mainlanders to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
