Four mainland men nabbed for involvement in detention and extortion
On the night of 4th January 2024, the Public Security Police Force transferred a case to the Case Reporting and Emergency Operation Centre of the Judiciary Police, involving the deprivation of other’s freedom of movement and extortion which had taken place inside a hotel room. The Robbery Offences Section of the Judiciary Police followed up with the case promptly.
Case details revealed that, the victim was detained inside a hotel room in Cotai. During the course, the victim sought help from his family members who were able to find his friend in Macao to assist in reporting the case to the police. Based on the leads provided, personnel of the Judiciary Police found the victim inside the relevant hotel room, and seized two men who were responsible for guarding the victim at the scene.
The victim stated that, he was hired in the mainland to bring “practice vouchers” to Macao for delivery, and would be rewarded with $7,000 upon completion of the task. On the day of the crime, he brought “practice vouchers” to a designated hotel room as instructed. Six mainland men inside the room forcibly confined the victim to the room in no time, alleging that the syndicate which the victim belonged, had defrauded individuals inside the room of RMB140,000 with “practice vouchers”, and ordered the victim to return the relevant sum of money immediately. The victim was even beaten up by the other party. With no other alternatives, the victim could only call his family members to assist in raising the funds. During the course, he secretly informed his family members of the location of the detention and asked them to contact his friend in Macao to help report the case to the police. Subsequently, four of the involved men left the room, whilst the two remaining men took charge of guarding the victim.
Upon investigation, the Judiciary Police identified the physical features of the four men at large, and learnt that two of the involved men were inside a hotel room in Cotai district. Personnel of the Judiciary Police launched deployment instantly. On the morning of January 5th, another two involved men were seized.
Having inquired the four involved men, they claimed that they had been defrauded by the victim’s syndicate with “practice vouchers” earlier. Thus, they lured the victim to the room on the pretext of currency exchange again. Their aim was to pursue the defrauded funds. All four involved men denied assaulting nor detaining the victim.
Based on the investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the four aforesaid involved men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of deprivation of other’s freedom of movement and extortion, while continuing to pursue the two involved men at large.
In addition, since the victim was suspected of committing fraudulent acts of crime with “practice vouchers”, the Judiciary Police had already established another case file for investigation.
