Two mainlanders arrested for “practice vouchers” exchange fraud
On the evening of 13th December 2023, the Judiciary Police was notified by the Public Security Police Force that an exchange fraud case had taken place in a casino hotel in Taipa. The male victim in the case had arranged to meet with the involved mainland man for currencies exchange using a social networking app, and the latter subsequently brought the involved mainland woman to the scene to settle the transaction. After the victim had transferred RMB190,000 to a designated bank account according to the instructions of the involved woman, the latter handed two stacks of 200 banknotes styled as HKD1,000 to the male victim. Feeling suspicious, the victim therefore requested the two individuals to proceed to the casino cage together to exchange the abovementioned banknotes for chips, only to find that all the banknotes were counterfeits commonly known as “practice vouchers”, hence the victim immediately reported to the police for assistance.
Upon investigation, the involved man claimed that he did not have sufficient funds to exchange currencies with the victim, thus summoned the involved woman through others to conduct the transaction, and that he would be rewarded with HKD300 upon completion of the transaction; whereas the involved woman claimed that she had been instructed by someone to take the relevant banknotes to carry out the transaction with the victim, and that she would be rewarded with RMB5,000 upon completion of the transaction. Both of them denied knowledge that the banknotes in question were “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police transferred the two involved mainland individuals to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
