Two mainland Chinese arrested in the crackdown of two cases of “practice vouchers” exchange fraud
The Judiciary Police received two cases of “practice vouchers” exchange fraud on 21st and 22nd November 2023.
Case one
The Judiciary Police was notified by the Public Security Police Force of a case of “practice vouchers” exchange fraud that had taken place in a hotel room in Taipa on 21st November 2023. The male victim from mainland China had arranged to meet with a “money exchange gang” member to exchange currencies, using social networking app, in a hotel room in Taipa. The involved mainland Chinese woman later arrived to settle the transaction. Having instructed the victim to remit RMB 200,000 to a designated bank account, she handed him two stacks of banknotes styled as HKD 1,000, before excusing herself. Feeling suspicious, the victim inspected the banknotes at once, only to find that all but the one on the top were counterfeit notes commonly known as “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police seized 200 “practice vouchers” at the scene and four forged identity cards of mainland China on the involved woman, who admitted to have been instigated to bring the involved banknotes to settle transaction with the victim for a reward of RMB 6,000. She was allegedly unaware of the banknotes being “practice vouchers”. The said fake identity cards had been forged by someone else in mainland China; she refused to disclose the purpose of such fake identity cards.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland Chinese woman to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of fraud (considerably huge amount) and forging document of significant value.
