“Practice vouchers” fraud case busted with one mainland man apprehended
On 19th November 2023, the Judiciary Police received a report that an exchange fraud case had taken place in a hotel room in Taipa. The Economic Crimes Division deployed personnel to follow up the investigation.
The male victim of the case had an appointment with the involved mainland man via social networking app to exchange currency at the abovementioned location on the morning of the day. Having transferred RMB199,800 to the mainland bank account designated by the opposite party, the male victim counted the two stacks of banknotes given by the opposite party and found that they were all counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. He thus reported to the police for help via the security department of the hotel.
Upon investigation, the involved mainland man admitted to have been solicited by others to come to Macao for exchanging currency with the victim, and a remuneration of RMB20,000 could be received afterwards. He claimed that he was not aware of the fact that the relevant banknotes were “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
