Two mainland individuals nabbed for involvement in currency exchange fraud
On 11th November 2023, the Public Security Police Force referred a case of currency exchange fraud to the Judiciary Police. Personnel of the Economic Crimes Division followed up with the investigation promptly.
Case details revealed that, via a social networking software, the mainland male victim scheduled to meet the involved mainland woman at a hotel lobby in the Cotai district for currency exchange on that day. The victim transferred a sum of RMB189,600 to a bank account designated by the other party. Yet, he found out that only one of the banknotes handed to him was a genuine HKD1,000 banknote, whilst the remaining 200 banknotes were entirely counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. Thus, he stopped the other party and reported to the police for assistance.
During investigation, the Judiciary Police received another report from another mainland man, indicating that he had been defrauded of RMB75,840 by another involved mainland man in the same way. For this reason, he reported to the police for assistance.
The Judiciary Police learnt from investigation that the two involved individuals (a man and a woman) belonged to the same fraud syndicate. The involved man admitted that he had been solicited to come to Macao to exchange currency with others, as well as introducing the involved woman to participate in committing crime. Upon completion of the mission, each of them would be rewarded with RMB3,000. He only knew that the banknotes he brought with him were “practice vouchers” after arriving in Macao. Nevertheless, he continued to carry out the deal with the victim. As for the involved woman, she claimed that she had no idea that the relevant banknotes were “practice vouchers”.
Given that there were strong indications showing that the duo had committed the crime, the Judiciary Police transferred the duo to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of criminal syndicate and fraud (considerably huge amount).
