Judiciary Police cracked a case of trafficking and consuming of the drug “ice”, with two mainland men arrested
On 4th November 2023, the Judiciary Police received three cases of currency exchange fraud involving “practice vouchers” that had taken place at casinos and hotels in the Cotai district respectively. Personnel of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police carried out follow-up investigation promptly.
Case details revealed that, on that day, three mainland male victims came to an agreement with members of a “money exchange gang” in exchanging Hong Kong dollars with Renminbi respectively. The trio headed to the casinos and hotels in the Cotai district on their own to conduct the deals. After transferring money to a designated bank account as instructed by the other party, the three victims found out that all the banknotes received were in fact counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. A total of three individuals were involved in the three cases. The three victims suffered a loss of approximately MOP300,000 in total.
Three involved individuals all confessed that they had been instructed by others to carry out the deals with the victims. Two of them, a male and a female, admitted that each of them would be rewarded with around RMB3,000 upon completion of the task. Yet, all of them claimed that they had no idea that the banknotes concerned were “practice vouchers”.
Based on the investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the three involved individuals to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (massive amount) and fraud (considerably huge amount) respectively.
