Three mainland men nabbed for involvement in two currency exchange fraud cases respectively
On 31st October 2023, the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police busted two currency exchange fraud cases in succession, apprehending three mainland men.
In the first case, two mainland individuals (man and woman) engaging in illegal currency exchange activities met up with two involved mainland men at a hotel in the Cotai district on that day for currency exchange. The male victim transferred a sum of RMB190,100 to a designated bank account. While counting the banknotes handed to him by the other party, he found out that, all of the banknotes were counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. Thus, he stopped the other party and reported to the police for assistance. Police constables of the Public Security Police Force arrived at the scene to investigate the matter. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the Judiciary Police for follow-up.
As for the second case, a mainland female victim engaged in currency exchange with the involved mainland man inside a hotel room in the Cotai district on the same day. The female victim transferred a sum of RMB90,000 to a designated mainland bank account as instructed by the other party. Yet, she discovered that the 5 stacks of 500 Hong Kong dollar banknotes in total handed to her by the other party were all counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. She then stopped the other party and reported to the police for assistance.
Three involved men all confessed that they had been instructed by others to come to Macao to exchange currency with people. Upon completion of each deal, each of them would be rewarded with RMB20,000 or RMB10,000. Yet, the trio claimed that they had no idea that the banknotes concerned were “practice vouchers”.
Based on the investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the three involved men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount) and fraud (massive amount) respectively.
