Telephone fraud case “Guess who I am” cracked with a Hong Kong man arrested
The Judiciary Police received a complaint from a local woman on 28th October 2023, indicating that she had received a phone call from someone who claimed to be her grandson on October 27th , who told her that he was demanded to pay MOP70,000 as a compensation for injuring someone. The unsuspecting female victim thus handed the amount to a man, who self-claimed to be a lawyer, as instructed,. She later learnt that she was cheated after confirming with her family members; therefore reporting the case to the police.
The personnel of the IT Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police identified the Hong Kong man who received the money in the case, and found out that he had already fled Macao after committing the crime. Until October 31st, when the involved man re-entered Macao to commit crime again, the Judiciary Police made deployment and intercepted him as he departed Macao via the Macao Port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
The involved man confessed that he was hired by a Hong Kong fraud syndicate, and he was responsible for receiving a total of MOP220,000 and HKD150,000 from two female victims. He then deposited the fraudulent proceeds to designated bank accounts via ATM machines, receiving a reward of 10% of the fraudulent proceeds each time. The Judiciary Police successfully got in touch with the other female victim of the case, and confirmed that she was defrauded out of MOP150,000 and HKD150, 000 by the same modus operandi.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount) and criminal syndicate, while continuing to pursue the whereabouts of the fraudulent proceeds and the other involved persons.
