Mainland man arrested for “currency exchange fraud”
On 26th October 2023, the Judiciary Police was notified by the Taipa Subdivision of the Public Security Police Force that a case of suspected currency exchange fraud had happened, with a total of 300 pieces of “practice vouchers” seized. Officers of the Economic Crimes Division thereupon conducted follow-up investigation.
Case details revealed that the mainland victim intended to exchange for HKD200,000 with RMB, thus contacted the involved mainland man, via social media app, to discuss the exchange. They met up inside a hotel room in Cotai district for the transaction. Upon transferring the related funds to the involved man’s designated bank account, the victim discovered that the banknotes handed-over by the latter were counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. The victim demanded a refund, yet the involved man only returned RMB4,600. The victim reported to the police for help when the remaining funds were not repaid.
The involved man claimed that he was instructed by someone before the incident to bring “cash” from Zhuhai to Macao for exchange, yet he did not notice that the “cash” he got were “practice vouchers”.
Integrating the investigative results, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
