Another local arrested during the continued investigation of phone scam case “Guess who I am”
Two local men were arrested at the crackdown of a phone scam on 21st February 2023. At that time, a local man reported to the Judiciary Police that he had received a call from a male stranger on February 20th, telling him that his grandson had to pay MOP 100,000 in compensation to resolve a personal dispute. Before settling the payment, the victim verified with his grandson just in time, only to find out about the phone scam. Upon investigation by the I.T. Crimes Division officers of the Judiciary Police, two involved men were successfully apprehended and transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office on the 22nd day of the same month.
The two said involved persons were allegedly instructed by upper level members to collect the illicit funds. Upon investigation, the Judiciary Police identified one of the upper level members, who had stayed outside the territory all along. He was intercepted upon his entry via Portas do Cerco on 17th October 2023.
The involved person admitted to have instigated the two said arrestees to perpetrate, using communications software, as instructed by another upper level member, whom he also assisted in locating and guiding the duo in their perpetration. However, not only did he deny knowing about the phone scam and collecting fraud proceeds, but he also denied having received reward in the incident.
Based on investigative results, there were compelling indications that the involved person had assisted the criminal syndicate in committing fraud. The Judiciary Police detained and transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of criminal syndicate and fraud (massive amount), while pursuing the syndicate ringleader and other involved persons.
