Mainland man apprehended for abuse of trust of considerably huge amount
The Judiciary Police received a report from a local man on the morning of 16th October 2023, stating that his employee, a fellow townsman, had snapped cash of foreign currencies worth equivalent to approximately MOP7,000,000 under his custody. Investigation was swiftly initiated.
Case details revealed that the male victim, who was engaged in illegal currency exchange activities in Macao, had cash of USD600,000 and EUR250,000 brought to his shop near the Border Gate from Zhuhai by parallel traders on October 16th. It was only around 8:00 on the morning of the same day when the victim received a phone call from another employee did he realise that the involved man had secretly snapped the abovementioned amount of money. Having failed to contact him, the victim thereby reported to the Judiciary Police for help.
Personnel of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police confirmed after investigation that the involved man was hiding in a foot massage parlour in the Central District, thus intercepted him and seized part of the illicit proceeds in the parlour successfully. During investigation, the involved man was found to have overstayed in Macao for nearly one month without any employment permit to work in Macao and he refused to reveal the whereabouts of the rest of the illicit proceeds.
Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of abuse of trust (considerably huge amount), while pursuing the whereabouts of other involved persons and the illicit proceeds. In addition, regarding the issues of non-compliant employment and sheltering illegal immigrant, the Judiciary Police has opened a separate case file for follow-up investigation.
