The Judiciary Police solved “guess who I am” telephone fraud case with two local men arrested
A case of fraud was referred to the Judiciary Police from the Public Security Police Force in the wee hours of 11th October 2023, in which the local female victim stated that she had received phone calls on October 9th and 10th from a person claiming as her son that he needed to make compensation for injuring someone. She handed an amount equivalent to around MOP 135,000 to two men on two successive occasions. She learned later that she had been defrauded after seeking confirmation from her son, thus reported the case to the police.
Personnel of the I. T. Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police identified the two involved local men after investigation, and swiftly intercepted them on the afternoon of the same day, while retrieving MOP 186,000, which was suspected to be fraudulent proceeds involved in multiple cases of the same type. The duo confessed that they had got acquainted with a stranger on a chatting app and collected a total amount equivalent to MOP 345,000 from 3 local women between October 9th and 11th per the stranger’s instruction, then had the amount exchanged to RMB via currency exchange shops and individuals engaging in illegal exchange before depositing to a designated mainland bank account, to earn a reward of around MOP 30,000. Two other victims in the case were successfully contacted and they both stated that they had been defrauded by the same modus operandi.
The Judiciary Police transferred the two involved men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount), while continuing to investigate whether they were involved in more cases of the same type.
