The Judiciary Police received a complaint from a local woman on 18th September 2023, indicating that she had received a phone call from someone self-claimed to be her “son”, who was demanded for a compensation of MOP100,000 due to a bodily assault. The unsuspecting female victim immediately brought the money to Three-lamps district and handed it over to a man self-claimed to be a lawyer outside a bank. Soon afterwards, the “son” called again, asking for another MOP90,000 of medical fees, which aroused the suspicion of the female victim. Upon confirming with her family, the victim realized that she had been scammed, thus reported to the police.
On September 19th, officers of the IT Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police noticed that the purported “son” had called the female victim to meet and hand over the fund, forthwith launched a deployment, and seized the involved Hong Kong man outside an eatery at Three-lamps district, with the MOP90,000 of fraud proceeds recovered.
