Filipino man arrested for online romance scam
A local woman reported to the Judiciary Police respectively in October 2022 and May 2023 that she had been defrauded of a total of MOP 160,000 by an online boyfriend.
In August 2022, the female victim got acquainted with a man on a social networking platform and developed an online romantic relationship with him, who, in October 2022, used various excuses to lure the victim into transferring around MOP 60,000 to designated bank accounts before going missing. When the other party contacted the victim with another social account in May 2023, he beguiled the latter into transferring money with other excuses, incurring a further loss of MOP 100,000.
Upon investigation by the I.T. Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police, the holders of the two involved accounts were identified. One of them had fled Macao, whereas the other was a Filipino man, who was intercepted at his workplace on 11th September 2023. He had allegedly opened the involved accounts to collect fraud proceeds at the request of his girlfriend in the Philippines. In addition to the MOP 50,000 from the victim of this case, he had also used other accounts to receive a total of MOP 100,000 from unknown sources. The sum of MOP 150,000 had been transferred to his girlfriend for purchasing a residence in the Philippines.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount), while continuing to pursue the other involved person and the whereabouts of the funds of the accounts in question.
