Hong Kong woman apprehended for money laundering
The Judiciary Police received a report from a local woman in August 2020, stating that she had got acquainted with a man via online social platform in May 2019 and had developed a cyber friendship. After that, the opposite party introduced her to a website of so-called “virtual currency platform” for investment. In July 2019, the woman made multiple remittances to a Hong Kong bank account designated by the opposite party for investment and only suspected that she had been defrauded when the abovementioned website suddenly broke down in August of the same year, incurring a total loss of MOP1,909,200.
After in-depth investigation by the I.T. Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police, the identities of several account holders who had received the fraudulent proceeds were confirmed. Among them, a Hong Kong woman was intercepted when she entered Macao on August 27th this year. The woman, whose account was involved in receiving suspected fraudulent proceeds of HKD600,000, denied the perpetration and argued that she had lost the ATM card and password of the involved beneficiary account in May 2020. However, investigation by the Judiciary Police revealed that she had expressed to a man that her bank account could be provided for beneficiary purpose via telecommunication app, and even informed the man subsequently that hundreds of thousands of dollars had been received in the account.
Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved woman to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of money laundering and fraud (considerably huge amount), and continued to pursue other involved persons and the whereabouts of the fraudulent proceeds.
