Mainland woman arrested for fraud of considerably huge amount
On 1st August 2023, the Judiciary Police received a complaint from a local man, claiming that a mainland woman had defrauded him out of MOP2.385 million with the pretext of selling virtual currency and inheritance.
Case details revealed that the victim had got acquainted with the involved woman in April 2021, who indicated an intention to sell USD6 million worth of virtual currency (60 units). Failing to afford the huge handling charges, she asked for an emergency loan from the victim, promising a reward of HKD3 million to the victim after the matter was done. The unsuspecting victim lent an equivalent of MOP805,000 to the involved woman, who afterwards claimed that her virtual currency app was hacked, leading to a total loss of her virtual currency, hence insolvent. Later on, the involved woman claimed that she was going to inherit over USD8 million worth of legacy from her classmate in the United States, luring the victim to lend her money for a “facilitation payment” while promising a reward of HKD6 million to him. The victim thus loaned MOP1.58 million to the involved woman, who thereafter kept on using various excuses to delay paying back the loan. The victim suspected that he had been deceived, therefore reported to the police for help.
Officers of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police identified the involved woman and intercepted her at the Hengqin Border on August 15th. She admitted to her perpetration, and the related funds were all gambled away. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved woman to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
