Macao woman arrested for fraud
On 22nd January 2020, the Judiciary Police received a report from a Macao man, indicating that in May 2016, he had authorised a female friend to apply for investment immigration to Canada and paid HKD 2.56 million as procedure fee. However, there was no progress in the application and nothing had been heard of, the victim thus suspected that he had been defrauded and reported the case to the Judiciary Police.
The Judiciary Police inquired from the Canadian police via the Macao Sub-Bureau of the China National Central Bureau of INTERPOL and learnt that the relevant authorities of the local government did not have the record of the male victim’s application for immigration nor the registration record of establishing a company. It was also learnt that the involved Macao woman did not possess the capacity as an intermediary to apply for immigration to Canada, while her bank account data revealed that the aforementioned amount had already been received.
Investigation revealed that the involved woman had been staying in the mainland and was later located with the assistance of the mainland police. She was transferred to the Judiciary Police for handling by the mainland police on 23rd June 2021. The Judiciary Police transferred her to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount) based on the information gathered in the investigation.
