Mainland woman arrested for transferring counterfeit currency
On 18th January 2020, a report was received from a casino in the Cotai district, stating that a mainland man had attempted to exchange ten Renminbi banknotes, each with a face value of 100 yuan, for Hong Kong dollars, but six of them were found counterfeit. The Judiciary Police initiated investigation after receiving the report, and seized another 78 counterfeit Renminbi banknotes from him. He claimed that he had received the counterfeit banknotes when conducting illegal exchange with a woman. The involved woman was later identified. Meanwhile, a report was found being received on 16th January 2020 from the same casino that at least 66 torn counterfeit Renminbi banknotes had been found in the waste bin of a public female washroom, having the same numbers as those in this case, and they were all from the aforementioned involved woman, who had fled Macao immediately after committing the crime.
On 30th May 2021, the involved woman had entered Macao again, and the Judiciary Police immediately pursued her, eventually intercepting her in a hotel in the Central district on June 3rd.
Integrating investigations of various aspects, it was proven that all the involved counterfeit banknotes belonged to the involved woman, who was thus transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of transferring counterfeit currency and fraud.
