Mainland man nabbed for involvement in fraud by uttering counterfeit banknotes
On 28th May 2021, a fraud case was referred by the Public Security Police Force to the Judiciary Police in which a mainland female victim was defrauded of approximately HKD200,000 by somebody on the pretext of currency exchange.
Case details revealed that, the female victim was accosted by a mainland man at a hotel in the Cotai Strip. The man claimed that he could assist in exchanging currency. Thus, she remitted RMB168,300 to a bank account designated by the involved person and received a corresponding amount of two stacks of cash in Hong Kong dollars immediately. Yet, while counting the money, she found that, apart from the two banknotes on the surface were real, the rest of the banknotes were all counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. When the female victim was about to question the involved person, he dashed away instantly. Eventually, the involved person was stopped by the accompanying friend of the female victim who reported to the police for assistance.
In this case, 145 counterfeit banknotes (practice vouchers) with the denomination of HKD1,000 were seized. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
