Mainland man arrested for committing fraud with fake banknotes
On 20th May 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a mainland man who claimed to have been defrauded of around HKD150,000 by someone with the excuse of currency exchange.
Case details revealed that the victim had made an appointment, via an online communication app, with the involved mainland man to exchange currency at the lobby of a hotel in Cotai. The victim remitted RMB126,975 to a mainland bank account designated by the involved man, who forthwith handed over the equivalent amount of cash in HKD to the victim. However, most of the banknotes were found to be fake banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers” upon counting, therefore the victim reported to the police for help.
Subsequent to investigation, the Judiciary Police arrested the involved man who denied of perpetration and refused to explain the origins of the fake banknotes. Nevertheless, the Judiciary Police discovered from the involved man’s mobile phone the involved evidence prior to his perpetration in Macao, therefore transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
