Mainland Chinese man arrested in mainland in a successful crackdown of a fatal robbery case in collaboration with the mainland police
The Judiciary Police was notified by the Fire Services Bureau on the afternoon of 7th May 2021 that a female body had been found in a hotel room in Cotai. Prompt on-site investigation revealed that the deceased, lying face down on the floor, had her neck entangled with a blood-stained bathrobe belt. Finding the cause of death suspicious, the Judiciary Police swiftly initiated the felony crime scene investigation procedure.
In-depth investigation revealed that the victim had engaged in illegal currency exchange in Macao. When she went with a mainland Chinese man to the location of the crime for currency exchange on the evening of May 3rd, the latter strangled her and grabbed HKD 250,000 of cash and her mobile phone. The involved man gambled in nearby casinos shortly after his perpetration, before subsequently fleeing to mainland China via Portas do Cerco.
Examination on the body by a medical examiner indicated multiple third party-induced bruises on the deceased’s limbs and ligature marks on the neck caused by the bathrobe belt, suggesting suffocation as the cause of death, hence homicide. The time of death, around four days before the discovery, matched with the tragic moment after the deceased followed the involved man into the hotel room.
Upon identification of the involved man, the Judiciary Police immediately requested the mainland Chinese police to launch arrest operation, via the mechanism for emergency regional policing assistance; under the coordination of the Police Liaison Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, as well as the supervision of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs and the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, the involved man was apprehended in Cangzhou City, Hebei Province on the evening of May10th. He was subsequently transferred to the regional prosecutions authority for interrogation, during which he admitted to his perpetration.
The rapid crackdown of this case has manifested the close cooperation of the two police forces in combating severe crimes, demonstrating the professionalism and efficiency of the mainland police and its important role in upholding Macao’s security and stability.
