Hong Kong woman arrested for defrauding on the pretext of e-commerce platform investment
On 10th May 2021, seven local residents reported to the Judiciary Police successively, claiming that they were defrauded by a Hong Kong woman on the pretext of investing in an emerging e-commerce platform, incurring a total loss of RMB 3.6 million.
Investigation revealed that during the period from September 2019 to April 2021, the seven victims were persuaded by the involved woman to invest in a mainland online live commerce platform, which she claimed could bring a 20% profit. Each victim invested tens of thousands to over a million RMBs respectively and was issued a “loan agreement” and a “procurement contract” from an e-commerce merchant. At first, some of the victims received a return of tens of thousands of dollars, but later on, the involved woman defaulted on the payments of principal and profit to the victims, on the pretext of payment arrears from the merchant. Suspecting that they were being defrauded, the seven victims reported to the police for help.
The Judiciary Police brought the involved woman in on May 11th for investigation. She alleged that she received a total of RMB 2.8 million from the seven victims previously for the investment in e-commerce platform. Subsequently, due to arrears from the e-commerce merchant, she had difficulty facilitating the capital turnover. However, she was unable to provide the relevant transaction proofs. Since there were strong indications that she had defrauded the seven victims, the Judiciary Police transferred her to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
