Mainland man arrested for involvement in robbery
On 4th May 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a casino hotel in the Cotai district, stating that a female hotel guest was robbed of HKD500,000 in chips at knifepoint by a man. The involved man was subsequently intercepted by the hotel security guards in the casino.
Case details revealed that the female victim was resting in a room when the involved man rang the doorbell. While the victim opened the door to check, the man pushed open the door and threatened the victim to hand over her belongings with a knife. The terrified victim then placed HKD 650,000 in chips on the table. The involved man further threatened the victim to fill out an IOU of HKD 500,000, and demanded the victim to make a video proclaiming that she signed the IOU because she failed to repay a loan. The man then grabbed HKD500,000 in chips and fled the room. The victim called the hotel staff for help immediately and requested them to call the police. Not long later, the hotel security guards intercepted the involved man in the casino and notified the Judiciary Police to handle the case at the scene.
The Judiciary Police seized HKD 200,000 in cash, HKD 300,000 in chips and the relevant IOU from the man, and found the video clip which he had coerced the victim to record at knifepoint on his mobile phone. The Judiciary Police also recovered the knife that the involved man had used in a nearby rubbish bin. After in-depth investigation, it was revealed that the involved man was listed as an unwelcome individual by the casino and was unable to cash the chips, thus he scouted for a casino patron to assist in cashing chips worth of HKD 200,000.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charges of robbery and prohibited weapon.
