Man arrested for fraud of huge amount
In mid-February 2021, the Judiciary Police received reports successively from two local residents and one male non-resident worker, claiming to have been defrauded of HKD420,000 in total by a local man with the excuse of assistance in currency exchange.
Case details revealed that between January and February 2021, the involved man successively professed to the three victims that he was able to exchange RMB at a low rate. Upon receipt of cash in HKD from the victims, the involved man sent out fake screenshots of bank transfers. After checking their accounts, the three victims discovered that the related funds were yet to be received. After being questioned, the involved man gave various excuses to drag on but eventually admitted to two of the victims that he had gambled away the funds.
Subsequent to investigation, the Judiciary Police found out that the involved man had fled Macao after perpetration. It was not until February 22nd that he was intercepted at the Portas do Cerco checkpoint. The involved man confessed to have committed fraud due to gambling debts, while sending fake screenshots of bank transfers to each victim so as to stall for time to flee Macao and only returning to Macao afterwards.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charges of fraud (considerably huge amount) and computer forgery.
