Local male pawnshop employee arrested for fraud and abuse of trust
On 4th January 2021, the Judiciary Police received a case concerning abuse of trust referred by the Public Security Police Force, in which the male employee of a pawnshop in Macao had taken advantage of his job to embezzle more than two million Hong Kong dollars of payment for goods. Afterwards, being self-aware of his inability to repay the money, the male employee turned himself in to the police.
Investigation by the Judiciary Police revealed that the involved male pawnshop employee had embezzled the payments for purchase of several luxury watches from customers, totaling HKD2.87 million during January to December 2020, and had pawned a luxury watch for HKD40,000 on the pretext of assisting a friend to take the watch for repair. He admitted to having falsely claimed that he was capable of soliciting potential customers and selling the luxury watches at a high price in a bid to gain trust from the pawnbroker, thereby embezzling the goods payment for daily expenses and repayment of personal debts.
The Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount) and abuse of trust (massive amount), while pursuing the whereabouts of the proceeds of crime and luxury watches.
