Four fraud cases using counterfeit currency busted successively, with 4 mainland men apprehended
Between 11th and 13th November 2020, the Judiciary Police successively busted four fraud cases conducted with counterfeit currency. Four mainland men were arrested, involving nearly RMB370,000.
Case details revealed that through referral by friends or chat groups on some instant communication apps, the five male mainland victims in these four cases had negotiated with four mainland men respectively to exchange HKD in cash, then making individual appointments to conduct the transactions at hotel lobbies or guest rooms in Cotai district. Per instructions, each victim made online transfers ranging from RMB86,000 to 115,000 to the involved men’s designated bank accounts in mainland in order to receive the equivalent HKD in cash forthwith. However, all the banknotes were found to be fake money commonly known as “practice vouchers” upon counting. Aided by the security personnel from the hotels, the victims filed complaints at the Public Security Police Force, which were then referred to the Judiciary Police for follow-up.
Subsequent to investigation, the Judiciary Police arrested four mainland men engaging in illegal currency exchange, seizing over 600 fake banknotes “practice vouchers” with a face value of HKD1,000 each. The four confessed to have been recruited earlier by a user or a recruitment chat group via some instant communication apps, and were responsible for smuggling the related counterfeit currency from the mainland to Macao for illegal currency exchange activities while receiving a reward ranging from RMB4,000 to 6,000 respectively. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved four men to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (huge amount) while continuing to pursue the whereabouts of the illicit proceeds and the other involved persons.
