Mainland Chinese man arrested for currency exchange fraud and transfer of counterfeit currency
The Public Security Police Force transferred a case of currency exchange fraud to the Judiciary Police on 30th August 2019. The victim from mainland China claimed that in an exchange transaction with a man in a hotel room in Cotai on 29th August 2019, he exchanged and transferred RMB 275,700 via online banking for HKD 300,000 of cash. However, the involved man refused to hand in the corresponding cash on the pretext that the money had not been received. The Judiciary Police then promptly arrested the man for fraud (considerably huge amount).
In-depth investigation into the case revealed the involvement of a criminal syndicate, nine members of which were identified. The syndicate involved at least 11 similar cases, totaling RMB 2.32 million. The Judiciary Police intercepted one of the syndicate members upon his entry into Macao on 6th November 2020, seizing 301 counterfeit banknotes, each of face value HKD 1,000, and six counterfeit chips, each of HKD 10,000, while learning that he had been using mainland Chinese bank accounts to receive criminal proceeds. The Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the three charges of fraud (considerably huge amount), transfer of counterfeit currency and criminal syndicate, while pursuing the other involved persons.
