Local man arrested for massive fraud
In mid-August 2020, the Judiciary Police received a fraud case in which a local male victim and his male friend reported that they had been defrauded of seven bottles of imported wine by a “parallel-goods trader” under the guise of assisting in the transport of goods to the mainland, involving MOP138,000.
The male victim claimed that he had bought seven bottles of imported wine in Macao for his friends who were in the mainland in early August, and entrusted the above male friend to assist in looking for a “parallel-goods trader” to transport the goods to the mainland, while the male friend would charge a transport cost of MOP300 per bottle. The victim stored the goods in a shop of a shopping mall located at the Border Gate awaiting delivery, yet he had not received any news of their arrival until mid-August. The entrusted male friend indicated that he had lost contact with a male “parallel-goods trader” after the latter picked up the goods at the shop. He also presented an identification document photo of the “parallel-goods trader” and subsequently proceeded to the Judiciary Police together with the male victim to report the incident.
In-depth investigation by the Judiciary Police revealed that the identification document of the aforesaid “parallel-goods trader” was a counterfeit. Meanwhile, based on the statements of the victim and his male friend, as well as the footage data of the Macao Citywide Electronic Surveillance System (commonly known as “Eyes in the Sky”) and the involved shop, it was found that the male friend did not arrange for a “parallel-goods trader” to transport those bottles of imported wine to the mainland. Instead, he sold them to an imported wine retailer in the Northern district for approximately MOP100,000.
The Judiciary Police subsequently recovered all the bottles of wine at the wine retailer, coupled with interception of the involved man upon his departure from Macao via the Border Gate on 20th October 2020. He admitted having used fake online identification photo to swindle the victim and that the illicit proceeds had been used to pay off his debts. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (massive amount).
