Macao man arrested for involvement in theft of luxury watch
On 8th October 2020, the Judiciary Police was informed by the Public Security Police Force, that a man had stolen a luxury watch by means of switching of goods at a watch and jewelry shop in the Horta e Costa district. The involved man was subsequently intercepted by the shop assistants.
Case details revealed that the involved man requested the female shop assistant to show him a watch (valued at HKD267,000) inside the showcase and enquired about the price at the aforesaid watch and jewelry shop. Yet, he dashed without waiting for the reply of the shop assistant. The involved man returned to the shop half an hour later and asked to try on the same watch. He then asked to adjust the size of the watch band to distract the attention of the female shop assistant. Later, he put down the watch and left. When the shop assistant put the watch back to the showcase, she found that the watch had been switched secretly. Together with another male shop assistant, she stopped the involved man immediately outside the shop and reported to the police.
During investigation, the involved man purported that he had switched his own watch with the one at the shop by mistake while trying on the watch. Nevertheless, the Judiciary Police conducted a professional assessment on the watch of the involved man. The result indicated that the watch was a counterfeit one. Thus, the involved man was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of aggravated theft.
