Man and woman arrested for fraud of considerably huge amount
The Judiciary Police received a report from two Macao men in early October 2020, stating that they had been defrauded of HKD 8.92 million by a couple on the pretext of assisting to exchange casino cash chips.
Investigation revealed that the two victims had learnt earlier that some mainland gamblers would like to cash out cash chips of Macao casinos, offering a reward of 7% of the transaction amount. The two thus carried out the cash out for gamblers in cooperation and got acquainted with the involved man via friends. The involved man, who was able to assist in the exchange, requested 6% of the transaction amount as a reward.
Between August and September 2020, the involved man had assisted the victims to cash out over HKD 20 million in total on several occasions. However, in early September, after the victims had handed HKD 10 million of cash chips to the involved man and his wife for cash out, the cash was never returned. The involved man stated that the casino chips had all been gambled away by his wife. He promised to repay the amount and signed an IOU, but had only repaid HKD 1.08 million even the victims dunned for the debt, and even went out of reach later.
The involved couple were intercepted on October 5th and 6th at the Border Gate departure checkpoint and a residential flat in Toi San district respectively. The couple refused to cooperate, but the Judiciary Police followed the leads and found that the involved persons had gone to casinos in Macao to gamble immediately after receiving the aforementioned chips, and had gambled away all the chips in several days. The Judiciary Police transferred the two to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
