Local man arrested for fraud and extortion
A victimised man reported to the Judiciary Police on 15th September 2020 that he had been defrauded of a total of around HKD 480,000 by a local man.
Investigation revealed that the victim had earlier informed the involved man about his mother being victimised in an online romance scam. The involved man then falsely claimed to be an acquaintance of a big gun in mainland China, and that he could help him track down the swindler at investigation charges and relevant expenses. The unbeknownst victim, who was also a friend of the involved man, was later contacted by a Wechat account created by the latter, who posed as a person helping the victim to hunt for the fraud syndicate in mainland China. He even claimed to have successfully found the lower-level members of the fraud syndicate while tracing the upper-level members. He demanded the victim to pay various charges on different excuses between June and September 2020. The victim had successively handed a total of HKD 480,000 on around 20 occasions to the involved man. When he was unable to pay anymore recently, the involved man immediately claimed that the said mainlander would come to Macao to cause trouble for him. Frightened and suspicious, the victim reported to the Judiciary Police.
The Judiciary Police identified the involved man upon in-depth investigation, intercepting him when he was leaving Macao via Portas do Cerco on 17th September 2020. The involved man admitted to have committed the crime, the proceeds from which had been used for daily expenses and deposited into bank accounts. He was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of fraud (considerably huge amount) and extortion.
