Local woman arrested for fraud
In May 2020, the Judiciary Police received an investigation request from the Public Prosecutions Office regarding a fraud case. Two residents claimed that they were defrauded by a woman in the name of investing in pawnshop and assisting in the application for government’s economic housing, losing a total amount equivalent to MOP1.28 million.
Investigation revealed that the involved woman had respectively convinced the two victims in mid-2018 to invest in the pawnshop that her son worked for, stating that the invested amounts along with interests could be claimed back after 6 months. Meanwhile, she falsely claimed to one of the victims that, via her relative who was working in the Housing Bureau, she could help the victim to apply for the government’s economic housing, and asked this victim for HKD40,000. The two victims finally could not collect their invested amounts and there was no reply on the economic housing application, thus they discovered that they had been cheated.
On 10th September 2020, the Judiciary Police brought the involved woman back for investigation, who stated that she had gambled away all the money. The Judiciary Police reviewed relevant information that the involved woman was banned from entering casinos, thus she was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount) and violation of order.
