Two men arrested for imposture in mortgaging an apartment
A woman reported to the Judiciary Police in January 2020 that her identity had been misappropriated for mortgaging her residential apartment, incurring a loss of around HKD 4 million.
Investigation revealed that the mortgaged apartment, owned by the female victim and her husband, was mortgaged to someone else for HKD 2.4 million in May and August 2017. Confirming the victim’s husband and her nephew’s involvement in the case, the Judiciary Police summoned the duo for investigation on 30th July 2020.
The victim’s husband admitted that when he failed to repay a gambling debt of HKD 2.4 million, he conspired with his wife’s nephew to steal her identity card. They then hired a woman for HKD 10,000 to impersonate the victim to sign mortgage papers at a law firm. Of the HKD 2.4 million loan, the duo only used HKD 680,000 for debt repayment; the rest had been gambled away.
The Judiciary Police transferred the two men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the three charges of fraud (massive amount), falsifying document of significant value and using other’s identity document, while continuing to pursue the other involved persons.
