Local man committed fraud by placing orders for face masks under arrest
On 12th June 2020, the Judiciary Police received an incoming call complaint from a representative of a Hong Kong pharmaceutical supplier, stating that a local merchant defrauded them of HKD230,000 with the excuse of ordering face masks. After in-depth investigation, the local man was summoned to assist in the investigation on July 20th.
Investigation revealed that the victim had become acquainted with the involved man in 2017. During the coronavirus pandemic, the victim contacted the involved man to order face masks, who acted as a middleman. Together with the head of another Hong Kong pharmaceutical agency, the victim placed orders equivalent to approximately HKD570,000 and HKD1.139 million respectively to purchase 2.5 million face masks from a face mask factory in Vietnam. The head of the above-mentioned Hong Kong pharmaceutical agency immediately paid approximately HKD570,000 as Phase I deposit. However, having known in late February that the Vietnamese factory could only ship 300,000 face masks, instead of informing the victim of this fact, the involved man urged the victim to transfer HKD230,000 deposit to his Hong Kong bank account. The involved man used the criminal proceeds for his daily expenses, and subsequently stalled by making up various lies to excuse his incapability to return the money, even ultimately losing contact.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
