How the fraud works:
- Culprits mount a card reader, using double-sided tape, over the real cash machine card slot to copy card details;
- Meanwhile, a spy camera overlooking the keypad is hidden to record PIN entries;
- The culprits then covertly monitor nearby;
- A card is cloned and cash is taken from the victim's account with the stolen card details and PIN.
Preventative measures:
- Be mindful of any suspicious devices fitted on the card slot and above the keypad;
- Always cover your hand when keying in your PIN;
- Beware of your surroundings when making withdrawals. Use another cash machine if someone is behaving suspiciously nearby.
